IAA2015 – German Manufacturers Catch Up with e-Mobility

This year’s IAA (International Motor Show) in Frankfurt Main is all about electromobility. We went through this exhibition together with customers and took a closer look at the German premium manufacturers’ “Concept Cars” in this segment.
The American company Tesla has long since been regarded as being the driving force with regard to electric cars. However this topic is also gaining momentum in Germany – and not only because of the environmental compatibility. In order to stay competitive worldwide among the leaders in the automotive industry, German manufacturers are starting to convert to electric motors.

Updated Proven Tradition

We visited the “New Mobility World” section where we encountered such theme parks as “Connected Car” and “Automated Driving” and also had a look at different manufacturer studies on e-Mobility.
For example, Audi has developed the A2 Concept. This four-seater is driven by a lithium-ion battery promising a range of 200 kilometers. The German CTO of Thunder Power, Peter Tutzer, is aiming even higher: Their electric car is supposed to boast a range of 650 kilometers and feature 435 hp in its fastest version.

Electric Mobility and German Standards

Porsche also presented the usual large numbers: The Mission E’s electric motor has 600 hp and manages a range of 500 kilometers. Battery performance is no less impressive: 80 percent of the battery is supposed to be charged after only a quarter of an hour.
All of this shows that German car manufacturers not only want to continue converting to electromobility – they would also like to close the gap between themselves and Tesla and carry over the proverbial “Made in Germany” credo from the automotive industry into the field of electromobility.
